Trout Lake House
At the end of a valley with sweeping views of Mt. Adams, this new 2,200 square-foot house and detached shop were designed to replace a decaying weekend cabin. After years of experience remotely managing the cabin, the owners wanted a simple, low-maintenance house that maximized views, had a strong connection to the outside, and was comfortable year round.
The open plan two story main wing is intended to promote gathering. It features a large central kitchen configured to accommodate multiple cooks while maintaining connection to the living room and outside living spaces. The separate low wing provides privacy and is oriented to define the main yard and screen neighboring houses.
Dramatic seasonal and hourly changes in natural lighting are controlled by sliding shutters made from wood reclaimed from the previous cabin, and fixed trellises with removable canvas covers. Design considerations included:
Keeping the interior spare.
Optimizing daylight year round.
Controlling intense summer sun and heat gain outside of the building envelope.
